The Future of Reading, written by Josh Quittner, explores the magazine and print industries movement to internet based content and usage of the iPad. Lots of very cool information and insight is in this article, but what I thought was most interesting was the first question he raises…
Will anyone be willing to pay for content delivered to a tablet when they can get information for free on the web?
The answer, ultimately, was yes. People want what is convenient. I know I do. I am a proud owner of a Kindle. I know there are free book sites available. If you take enough time to hunt around for a free version of a book, it’s probably out there somewhere. Now, keep in mind that I am a college student that bartends to pay my bills. Not an extravagant lifestyle that I lead. But this is something as simple as buying books. I chose to pay for the convenience of buying my books from Amazon because my time is precious. I don’t want to spend twenty to thirty minutes searching for a book online when I know I can go straight to Amazon and have it on my Kindle in under a minute.
